Entry for June 16, 2008

June 16, 2008

Hello everybody from beautiful Upstate New York.

We’ve been at the dock over two weeks now and are becoming acclimated to “life on land”. The boat is looking pretty good as we spend time on the cosmetic issues resulting from over 7,000 sailing miles. We’ve been cleaning, sanding and painting to really spiff-up Second Wind.

Laura has been working hard on finding work. She has looked at everything from Office Manager to Bartender and still hasn’t found the “right” workplace for the summer. She’ll keep looking and I’m sure she’ll find it.

I’ve been studying for my US Coast Guard Captain’s License and completing the other requirements. For example, we’re traveling to Endicott, NY this Saturday for an 8-hour class at the American Red Cross on First Aid, CPR and AED. I need those certificates in order to apply for the license and schedule the exam.

Secondly, we’ve been working on starting our charter business. We’ve met with an accountant who recommended we form a Limited Liability Company (LLC). I used a website (www.legalzoom.com) to file all the paperwork and we should have the business started in the next month or so. I’ll let you know how it works out.

The third big accomplishment was setting up a new website for the company. When you get a chance, check out http://www.sunnysailcharters.com. Remember that it’s a work-in-progress but we’d be happy to take any feedback you might have on the sections where we’ve added content. Please check it out when you get a chance and let us know.

Many of our friends and family have visited the boat and we’ve been having great fun showing our home to everyone. The marina has been very quiet during the week and I think we are 1 of only 3 couples that live-aboard their boats. I’m really going to enjoy living here for the summer. We take the boat out at least once a week to remind us what boating should be. I’m looking forward to starting charters and sharing this with other couples.

We’ll be keeping this blog and website active for the foreseeable future so check back often to see what we are doing. I’ll try to update it every week.
